Workshop on Reporting of Court
Proceedings by Media and Administration of Justice
A two day workshop on Reporting of Court Proceedings by Media
and Administration of Justice for Legal Correspondents / Journalists was
organized on March 29-30, 2008 at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi in
Association with Supreme Court Legal Services Committee, Press Council
of India, National Legal Services Authority and Editors Guild of
India. Mr. K.G. Balakrishnan,
Chief Justice of India/President, ILI inaugurated the function in the
presence of invited dignitaries and participants including Judges of the
Supreme Court, Senior Lawyers, Senior Editors, and Journalists. The
inaugural session was followed by six technical sessions on various
topics. Hon’ble Dr. Justice Arijit Pasayat, Judge Supreme Court
of India/Chairman Supreme Court Legal Services Committee presided over
the inaugural session and Professor K.N. Chandrasekharan
Pillai, Director, ILI welcomed the gathering.
Speaking at the inaugural session Justice
Balakrishnan opined that "the role of media has radically changed now
and it has greatly helped the common man to understand the nature and
contents of the judicial proceedings". He also appreciated that pivotal
roles played by both the media and judiciary in bringing all aspects of
administrtion of justice closer to every citizen. Justice Pasayat
pointed out that "the relationship between the media and the judiciary
is a symbolic one in relation to the services they seek to provide to
the citizens and both the institutions play a crucial role in ensuring
the maintenance of rule of law". Further, he suggested the need for a
uniform curriculum in all journalism colleges and institutes for
imparting training for journalists in reporting court proceedings.
Hon'ble Mr. Justice S.H. Kapadia in his keynote address mentioned that
'time has come for the Judiciary to explain itself to the public
that their decisions are subject to caveat i.e. legal knowledge of such
audience.' Justice H.K. Sema stated that freedom of Press lies in the
impartiality of press. Mr. N. Ram the Editor-in-Chief, The
Hindu emphasized the need for reviewing the law of criminal
defamation, contempt of court and codifying the law of Parliamentary
Privileges. Mr. G.E. Vahanvati, Solicitor General of India stressed the
importance of exercising restraint in reporting court proceedings.
Professor S. Sivakumar, Research Professor ILI/Coordinator, Organising
Committee proposed the vote of thanks. This is for the first time that
the judiciary and the media interacted on issues concerning reporting of
court proceedings.
Sulakhani Devi Memorial Lecture -
2008
The Indian Law Institute organised the 'Sulakhani Devi
memorial Lecture' on March 24, 2008 at 4.15 p.m at the ILI Plenary Hall.
Hon'ble Mr. Justice R.C. Lohati, Former Chief Justice of
India/President, ILI delivered the memorial lecture on the topic
'Values in a Democracy'. Justice Lahoti highlighted the
three aspects of values in a democracy, namely, values which
inspire the urge for democracy, values which the democracy must seek to
achieve the virtues of peoples which enable the democracy to survive.
Justice Lahoti traced the roots of these values in the Preamble to the
Constitution of India and opined that Justice, Liberty, Equality and
Fraternity are the guiding principles for a value oriented democratic
set up.
Hon'ble Mr. Justice S.B. Sinha, Judge, Supreme Court of
India and Chairman, Library Committee, ILI presided over the function.
Justice Sinha pointed out that 'the vlaues in a democracy are changing
according to the needs of the people in the society.' Mr. Dalip Kumar,
Registrar, ILI welcomed the gathering. Mrs. Mridula Mukherjee,
Chairperson of Sulakhani Devi memorial Trust proposed the vote of
thanks. Sulakhani Devi Memorial Trust was established by Mr. V.D.
Mahajan, Sr. Advocate in the memory of his late mother Sulakhani
Devi.
Presentation before Parliamentary
Standing Committee
Registrar, ILI made a presentation on March 26,
2008 before the Hon’ble Members of the Department of Parliamentary
Standing Committee on Personnel, Public Grievances, Law and Justice in
the Main Committee Room, Parliament Annexe regarding consideration of
demands for grants (2008-2009). The presentation highlighted the
activities undertaken by the Indian Law Institute during the year
2007-2008 and the proposed research activities to be undertaken during
the year
2008-2009.

Lecture
The ILI Employees’ Welfare Association
(ILIEWA) had its 16th
Foundation Day Lecture delivered by Mr. Gopakumaran Nair, Chairman,
Bar Council of India on the topic “Legal
Education: Role of the Bar” on 9th April, 2008 at the
Indian Law Institute. Hon’ble Dr. Justice A.R. Lakshmanan, Former Judge, Supreme
Court of India; Chairman, Law Commission presided over the function,
Mr. R.K. Anand, Senior Advocate and Vice President,
ILI was the
Chief Guest and Mr. P.H. Parekh, Senior Advocate and President, Supreme
Court Bar Association was the the guest of
Honour .
National Judicial Seminar on the 'Role of
Judiciary in Strengthening
the
Enfrocement of Copyright
Law'
A three day National Seminar on 'Role of Judiciary in
Strengthening the Enforcement of Copyright Law' was organized by
Department of Higher Education, Ministry of HRD, Govt. of
India and the Indian Law Institute on April 11-13, 2008 in Planery
Hall at Indian Law Institute. Hon'ble Smt. D. Purandeswari, Minister of
State for Human Resource Development inaugurated the function in the presence of
Hon'ble Mr. Justice V.S. Sirpurkar, Judge, Supreme Court of India, Mr.
G.R. Raghavender, Registrar, Copyrights, invited dignitaries and
participants including Judges of the Supreme Court, Senior Lawyers etc.
The inaugural session was followed by five technical sessions on various
topics. Hon’ble Mr. Justice V.S. Sirpurkar, Judge Supreme Court
of India gave inaugural address and Hon'ble Smt. D. Purandeswari,
Minister of State for Human Resource Development gave Presidential
Address, Vote of thanks was given by Mr. G.R. Raghavender, Registrar,
Copyrights and Professor K.N. Chandrasekharan Pillai, Director, ILI
welcomed the gathering. Valedicatory address given by Dr. Justice M.K.
Sharma.
